THE FILM

My Log: I have read the Feluda Series at least a hundred times and have nearly memorised the books over the past 20 years or so. What makes the stories to be read over and over again? Isn't one bored by reading the same stuff more than once? How many times have we read other stories so many times? Most of the Bengali readers who have read the original, I say this because the English version is also available now, thanks to Gopa Majumder and Chitrita Banerjee, have found this particularly intriguing that the even though the stories are plot wise flawed at times, the writing style is more like a screenplay, leaving nothing to your imagination. It is like a window through which you can actually see the events taking place one after the other in vivid detail.

The subtle humour induced in the form of Lal Mohan, from Sonar Kella onwards, is Ray's own way of presenting the typical nervous, middle class Bengali humour in day to day life. Though Ray tried to introduce a character similar to Laluda (as he is fondly called by Pulak Ghoshal, the leading movie director at Mumbai) in Gangtok e Gondogol, Nishikanto Sirkar, his entry was not as dramatic and did not have a long lasting effect as Jatayu.

Sarbagya Gangopadhyay aka Jatayu aka Lalmohan Ganguly is a character in Bengali Literature which shall be cherished forever.

From Topshey's Diary:

'For once, I did play a trick on Feluda in Golapi Mukto Rahashya, and paired up with Jatayu to fox him a little... but not for long...I dunno how he does it everytime !!!'

Trivia:

The first Screen Topshey, Sidhhartha Chatterjee, is a partner in the much talked about 'Bhajahori Manna' chain of Bengali Cuisine speciality restaurants.

Ray's Brilliance:

In Sonar Kella, the movie (when the car tyre bursts for the second time, the trio wait under a tree and Feluda goes through the train time table, for the next train to Pokhran), the most interesting thing to watch out for, are the THREE EMPTY LUNCH PACKETS lying on the ground. Topshey packed them before they commenced the trip. Now that's what I call continuity and detailing.
